US special forces kill Isis commander and capture wife in Syria raid

US special operations forces have killed an Islamic State commander through a dramatic and secretive raid into Syria and have taken a woman prisoner, the first US-held detainee of the war against Isis and a move that places immediate stress on one of Barack Obama’s signature wartime policies.

Ashton Carter, the US defense secretary, confirmed on Saturday that Obama ordered the elite troops to raid a location in eastern Syria and “capture” an Isis figure, Abu Sayyaf. Unusually, Carter said the raid also targeted the man’s wife, identified as Umm Sayyaf.

Abu Sayyaf was killed in the raid, Carter said. Umm Sayyaf was taken prisoner – a rarity for the Obama administration, whose reluctance to add to the complexities of US wartime detentions has often led it to kill battlefield targets instead of capturing them.

A White House statement indicated the Iraqi government “contributed” to the operation, involvement that could signal Umm Sayyaf’s ultimate dispensation.

A Pentagon spokesman told the Guardian Umm Sayyaf was being “held in a safe location inside Iraq” and would not be transferred to the detention center at Guantánamo Bay.

The administration was portraying the overall operation as a success.

Johannesburg's Ponte City: 'the tallest and grandest urban slum in the world'

In an inner-city neighbourhood gradually shedding its crime-riddled skin, Ponte is a symbol of the renaissance sweeping South Africa’s commercial capital

“On the 13th and 14th floor you could get anything from a blow-job to an acid trip in a few minutes. Essentially, the building was hijacked.”

In his penthouse apartment on the 52nd floor, Mike Luptak is talking about the bad old days when Ponte, the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere, fell into the hands of drug dealers, gangsters, pimps and prostitutes. The inner core of this 173-metre high concrete cylinder became a giant rubbish tip piled up as far as the fifth floor. Among the refuse and junk were, so legend has it, the bodies of residents who took a suicidal leap.

A great deal has changed since then. Featured in newspaper articles, photography exhibitions, documentaries and movies, Ponte has come to symbolise the rise and fall and rise again of South Africa’s commercial capital. It is part of an inner-city renaissance in recent years that has seen previous no-go areas turned into gourmet food markets, artists’ studios and trendy apartments.

Soyinka, Tinubu, others extol Amaechi’s virtues

FOR Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, yesterday will remain evergreen in his memory as eminent Nigerians took turns to eulogise him for his tenacity of purpose and uncommon conviction for standing on the path of truth and justice.

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, said he admired the courage of conviction Amaechi brought to bear on governance by standing for and sacrificing for what he believes in as he battled the powers-that-be in the country.

And former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Amaechi as a general of commonsense revolution that is devoid of violence.

The duo spoke yesterday in Lagos at the launch of a book, Dynamics of Change: The Amaechi Years.

General Election 2015: Boris Johnson wins Uxbridge, making him London Mayor and MP

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has landed himself a second job, by winning a west London seat for the Conservatives in the general election.
Johnson won 22,511 votes to take the Conservative safe seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.
Asked to comment on a shock exit poll which suggests that the Conservatives would gain the most seats in Parliament, Johnson said if the result was correct “then obviously, it's a very, very clear victory for the Conservatives and a very bad night for Labour”.

Tony Blair Wants A Nigerian, Chuka Umunna, To Be The Next Labour Leader

Former PM is backing shadow Business Secretary for top job if Ed Miliband fails to win general election

Tony Blair is backing Chuka Umunna to be the next Labour leader, the former prime minister’s friends have revealed, in an intervention that will set the battle for succession alight.

Several Labour frontbenchers are preparing their leadership campaigns in the event that Ed Miliband fails to secure victory next May.

But being anointed by the party’s most successful leader could be either a blessing or a curse for Mr Umunna, the shadow Business Secretary, given how far Mr Blair’s popularity in the wider Labour movement has fallen.

The MP for Streatham has repeatedly refused to set out his leadership ambitions and is actively loyal to Mr Miliband.

But he speaks regularly to Mr Blair and other New Labour veterans, including Lord Mandelson, Tessa Jowell and Lord Adonis.

The former PM sees Mr Umunna as a “natural heir” to his New Labour legacy, said a friend. Since being elevated to the Shadow Cabinet, Mr Umunna has stuck to his business brief, but in recent weeks has been more outspoken on immigration in the face of the Ukip surge.

His strident defence of the benefits of immigration to the UK has drawn further admiration from Mr Blair who is in total agreement, said a source.

Writing in The New York Times last week, Mr Blair took a thinly veiled swipe at Mr Miliband, saying that politicians needed to have jobs in the “real world” before Parliament.

Mr Miliband’s former job was as a special adviser to Gordon Brown, while Mr Umunna was in law before being elected in 2010.

The shadow Business Secretary is frequently labelled the “British Obama” – most recently by Le Monde in a glowing profile earlier this year.

But when asked in an interview for The Independent on Sunday in September whether he wanted to be leader of the party, Mr Umunna said he just wanted to serve in Mr Miliband’s cabinet.

A friend of Mr Umunna said last night: “Chuka was one of the first MPs to back Ed Miliband’s leadership campaign in 2010 and is fully focused on Labour winning next year and putting Ed into No 10.

His feet are firmly on the ground and he doesn’t get distracted by stories like this. He has met Tony Blair before, but so have many LabourMPs.”

Tony Blair: A career of controversies

A recent Survation poll, which showed video footage of possible Labour leadership candidates to voters, put Mr Umunna significantly ahead of his potential rivals, including Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham.

The changes to Labour leadership rules has weakened the power of the union vote, making it easier for a Blairite candidate to seize the crown.

Abortion Kills 34,000 Women In Nigeria Every Year

More than 34,000 young women die from abortion and its complications every year according to statistics reeled out by the President General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria and in the Diaspora, Dr. Kate Ezeofor.

According to Ezeofor, who addressed rural women in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday, a recent study showed the burden of abortion is even more destructive.

She said the study showed that for every one girl that died as a result of abortion, 20 others were impaired for life.

The Umuada Igbo leader said most of the fatal abortions resulted from attempts to terminate unwanted pregnancies using quacks.

Ezeofor was represented by Mrs. Philomena Nnamani at a sensitisation seminar held for rural women in the community on women’s reproductive health and rights and safe family planning method.

She said the death of a woman worsened the very bad state of infant mortality in Nigeria.

She said UmuadaIgbo had been going round Igboland organising seminars and programmes to teach families to practise family planning, how to space their children to attain a healthy and better family.
